Don’t Mess With Texas Trash Off

Join Keep Pearland Beautiful, Scout Troops, school groups, church groups, civic, families, organizations, and businesses from all over Pearland for the annual Don’t Mess With Texas Trash-Off on Saturday, April 14, 2012.

We will meet at the Pearland Community Center, 3523 Liberty Dr., starting at 7:30 a.m. for breakfast and assignments. Keep Pearland Beautiful will supply bags and gloves for the cleanup and will send a crew out to pick up the bags of trash. There will be prizes for all volunteers and four cash prizes will be awarded. There will be a random drawing from wrap-up reports submitted on time, a prize for the group submitting the most original clean-up photo of their group, a prize to the group collecting the most cigarette butts that day(must be verified with a photo) and a prize to the group picking up the most unusual piece of litter.

The Trash-Off is a part of a state-wide cleanup sponsored by Keep Texas Beautiful and the Texas Department of Transportation. It is also the signature event in Pearland for Keep America Beautiful’s Great American Cleanup, which runs from March through May and is considered the largest grassroots cleanup and community improvement event in the world. If you want to make a difference in our community, join us for the trash-off. For more information or to sign your group up to participate call the KPB office, 281-652-1659.

2011 Fall Trash Off a Great Success

Keep Pearland Beautiful wants to say thanks to all the hundreds of volunteers that came out on Saturday, September 10, 2011 to pick up litter in Pearland. We began the day at the Pearland Community Center, 3523 Liberty Dr. KPB served 120 kolaches, 4 dozen glazed donuts, 5 pounds of bananas, 10 pounds of oranges, 4 gallons of juice, 100 cups of coffee and 4 dozen granola bars. We had lots of enthusiastic helpers on hand even, if it was 7:30am on a Saturday morning.

KPB has received wrap-up reports from 38 groups that total over 623 volunteers, working 1012 hours to collect 286 bags of trash. Cub Scouts were out at Silverlake, Silvercrest, and Carleston. Boy Scouts were cleaning Knapp and Mykawa Road. St. Helens Catholic School had a group (61 their largest ever)picking up lots of cigarette butts on Pearland Parkway, the Knights of Columbus cleaned McHard and the Pearland Police Explorers Post cleaned Old Alvin from John Lizor to FM518. The Merrill Family took care of McHard Rd., the Wright family cleaned Park St., the Austin Family picked-up along Liberty Dr. and the Bank of America group picked up 11 bags of trash on Business Center Dr. The Pearland High School Interact club had 12 kids and the Dawson H.S. Football Booster Club gathered 12 bags of litter. City of Pearland IT employee John Knight tackled Pearland Parkway and the Pearland EMS had their group there to give a hand in front of the fire station on Old Alvin. Pearland Pools volunteers came out and cleaned Magnolia from Harkey to McLean . In addition, groups like David L. Smith Realty, New Life Lutheran, Crossroad Community Church Women’s Group, HEB Plus!, Pearland Desi Youth Group, Constable Buck Stevens office and our Brazoria County Adult Supervision community service workers did their part to make Pearland the cleanest most beautiful city in Texas.

Keep Pearland Beautiful was especially encouraged by all the first time volunteers that came out to pick up litter in Pearland on the 10th. There was a group of 25 from the Dawson H.S. Football players, five volunteers from the Peace Presbyterian and the James Wright family that has taken Park St. Each of these groups chose a roadway that is currently “up for adoption”. KPB hopes that everyone enjoyed their day and maybe met a few new friends along the way.

Some of the most unusual items found Saturday:

  • A pair of black underwear
  • Incredible Hulk doll
  • U-Haul lock
  • Cell phone
  • Shovel
  • Bones
  • Possum Head

Part of the KPB wrap-up report asks for suggestions from our volunteers for ways to improve the clean-up. One group suggests that High School students pick up trash during their physical education period and another wants KPB to draw more visits to our website, www.mykpb.org . Both are good ideas; KPB’s litter committee will be meeting on November 1 to pick our contest winners and discuss ways to improve the event.

Mark your calendars now for our Don’t Mess with Texas trash off set for April 14, 2012. Details will be posted on our website, ww.mykpb.org as the date gets closer. If you would like to get involved, check our website under the “Adopt-a-spot” tab, for roadways around town that are “up for adoption”. Comments may be sent to cowles@mykpb.org or call the office at 281-652-1659.
