2008 Fall Trash Off a Great Success!
Keep Pearland Beautiful wants to say thanks to all the hundreds of volunteers that came out
on Saturday, September 6 to pick up litter in Pearland.
We began the day at the Stella Roberts Recycling Center, 5800 Magnolia. KPB served 120
breakfast tacos, 50 breakfast bars, 9 pounds of bananas, 10 pounds of oranges, 6 gallons of
juice, 40 cups of coffee and 6 bags of powered donuts. We had lots of enthusiastic helpers
on hand even, if it was 7:30am on a Saturday morning.
All the wrap up reports have not been returned, but KPB thinks this fall will be an
outstanding turnout in terms of the number of volunteers. There were 24 groups reporting
that morning and many more that started their day at their Adopt-a-Spot locations. Cub
Scouts were out at Silverlake, Silvercrest, Challenger, Carleston, and Rustic Oaks Elementary.
Boy Scouts were cleaning Grand Blvd., Old Alvin, Knapp and Mykawa Road. St. Helens Catholic
School had a group picking up lots of cigarette butts on Pearland Parkway and the Girl Scouts
covered Woody Rd. and Park St. The Knights of Columbus and the Merrill Family took care of
McHard Rd. and the Jazzercise group picked up 7 bags of trash on Hatfield. The Pearland High
School Interact club had 25 kids and found a most unusual item: a 9mm ammo clip on the Bailey Rd
overpass!! City of Pearland IT employees and the Pearland EMS had groups there to give a hand.
The Silverlake Lions club came out in their bright yellow vests and cleaned Old Alvin at John Lizor
even though the grass was probably 12” high!! In addition, groups like the Exchange Club, Pearland
Islamic Center, Prudential Allied Realtors, New Life Lutheran, Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day
Saints and many family groups did their part to make Pearland the cleanest most beautiful city in Texas.
Keep Pearland Beautiful was especially encouraged by all the first time volunteers that volunteered
to help. There was a group of about 20 from Shadow Creek Ranch’s Mary Marek Elementary School. Since
their campus was already clean, this group decided to clean Pearland Parkway from John Lizor to Oiler
Dr. KPB hopes that everyone enjoyed their day and maybe met a few new friends along the way.
Some of the most unusual items found Saturday:
- Computer motherboard
- Pink ladies undergarment (use your imagination)
- Large piece of metal
- Ribbons
- Dead bird
- Pantyhose
- Electric fan
- Auto coolant tank
- “The Doors” record album
